Study Abroad in France: An Immersive Experience with Dr. Becel
My study abroad experience in France was made even more enriching by the guidance of Dr. Becel and a small group of FIU students. We were part of a larger cohort that included students from various universities around the world, creating a diverse and dynamic learning environment. As part of the program, we were assigned classes based on our level of French proficiency, which allowed for a personalized approach to language learning. The courses were fully immersive, with everything taught in French, and the professors never spoke English. This linguistic immersion pushed me to engage more deeply with the language and culture, accelerating my language skills and cultural understanding.
Living in Angers: A Small Town with Rich Culture
Living in Angers, a charming and historic town in western France, allowed me to experience a side of France that was both authentic and rich in culture. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Paris, Angers offered a quieter, more intimate setting where I could truly immerse myself in French life. From exploring the town’s medieval architecture to visiting local markets and cafes, I learned about the French way of life on a daily basis. Being part of this small community also helped me improve my language skills, as I interacted with locals in everyday situations, gaining new vocabulary and learning about the culture firsthand.

Cultural Immersion: Strengthening Language Skills and Building Connections
Beyond academics, my time in France allowed me to strengthen my French language skills in a way that textbooks and classroom settings never could. Staying with a French host family provided an invaluable opportunity to experience the nuances of the language in a relaxed, informal setting. It also gave me a deeper understanding of French culture, as I participated in family traditions, shared meals, and explored the town. These interactions were key to building connections with the people and the culture, giving me a sense of belonging and helping me feel more integrated into the community. This experience not only enhanced my fluency but also deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange.
